If you suspect you may have gum disease, our dentist, Dr. Brad A. Walker, offers gum disease evaluations at our dental office in San Jose, California. After your evaluation, should you have symptoms of gum disease, Dr. Walker will discuss gum disease treatment options with you.
Many people develop gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, at some point in their life. Gum disease is a degenerative condition caused by plaque and calculus (tartar), which harbor harmful bacteria in your mouth. Plaque and calculus must be removed regularly in order to the prevent buildup of these disease-causing bacteria.
The best way to prevent gum disease from developing is to practice good dental hygiene at home and attend all regular dental appointments for cleanings and exams.
Gum disease evaluations are performed as part of comprehensive dental examinations. Also known as gum disease risk assessments, these exams are an opportunity for Dr. Walker to check your gums for signs of periodontal disease, evaluate your medical history and discuss with you other factors to determine your risk of developing gum disease.
During your periodontal evaluation, Dr. Walker will take measurements around each tooth to find out how much space is between the tooth and gum, measure any gum recession or loosening of teeth, and check for any signs of inflamed gum tissue. This allows us to determine how likely you are to develop periodontal disease and diagnose the condition when it is in the earliest stages of development and easiest to treat.
Should you need periodontal treatment and maintenance, W Dentistry can provide effective gum disease treatments to help you keep your gum disease under control.
